Ignoring Women in the HHOF

Damien Cox in The Spin at the Toronto Star,
There are a number of highly qualified, highly respected and thoughtful hockey people on the selection committee of the Hockey Hall of Fame. Who’d have thought they could screw up so badly?
Last week, they announced the next Hall of Fame class, and it’s a good one - Glenn Anderson, Igor Larionov, linesman Ray Scapinello and the late Ed Chynoweth.
Sadly, however, the 18-member selection committee again booted the ball so badly on honouring women in the game that it has seriously discredited itself and soiled the reputation of this hockey institution.
It’s so rare I fully agree with a Cox rant. But it happens, and this is one such occasion.

How can these ladies’ contributions to women’s hockey be seen as any less important than those of their male counterparts?
Same reason women’s contributions are seen as less important in many other endeavours - they’re different from the OWGs who make decisions.
It’s unfortunate, but you get used to it - and it is changing, albeit slowly, and the dinosaurs gradually lose influence.

Sigh. It’s fun, isn’t it?
Anyway, it’s a great sign that the IIHF is recognizing such women in the sport, but as Cox points out, that leaves the HHOF no excuses for continuing to blow them off. And when he uses the word ‘misogyny’ I don’t think that’s an exaggeration, either. I can’t think of how else the Hall can justify women’s exclusion.

The fun never ends!
Dinosaur species evolved into birds or died out - there is hope for people yet.
(And OWG = “old white guy.” Any woman in a scientific or technical field - especially engineering - is familiar with the animal.)

The apocalypse is clearly upon us, but I couldn’t agree more. You can’t tell me that Cammi Granato, Angela James, Geraldine Heaney, or even Manon Rheaume (whose brief stint with the Bolts served as an inspiration for girls everywhere, and she actually lives in Southeastern Michigan, for the record) don’t have HoF qualifications, that Cassie Campbell or Danielle Goyette shouldn’t be first-ballot HoF’ers in a few seasons, or that Angela Ruggiero or Hayley Wickeneheiser should be inducted as soon after they hang up their skates as humanly possible.
