IIHF Agreement Falling Apart

from Allan Hougaard at the Hockey News,
The Czech Ice Hockey Association has decided not to sign the IIHF’s player transfer deal with the NHL after the 14 hockey clubs in the Czech Extraliga voted in favor of ending the current deal immediately. This likely means there will be no regulations surrounding the transfer of players between the European teams and the NHL next season.
The existing NHL-IIHF player transfer agreement was originally supposed to last until 2011, but the Euro nations in the agreement demanded it be reopened in December 2007. In order to gain time to negotiate a new, long-term agreement, the IIHF and NHL have been working to arrive at a one-year extension of the existing agreement.

It’s a case of the weak dollar right now. Europe has a chance to lure players away from the NHL because dollars aren’t worth as much as the euro. Russia has been at this for a while now, wanting to create a league to rival the NHL. So what better time to do than during a period of turmoil surrounding the dollar.

Superstars will always come to the NHL, where they can make the most money. What this does is reduce the number of middling stars in the NHL. Russians made up three of the top four point-getters and goal-scorers this season, yet there are probably fewer Russian players than any time since they first broke into the league. So it’s not a disaster, but it does reduce the overall skill level.

I don’t know much about the transfer issues but it seems that when no transfer agreement is in place, the NHL still gets the talent but don’t have to pay a price. I’m not sure what’s causing some countries to cancel it altogether since it seems like a case of kicking yourself in the butt.
