Ilitch Believes Schedule Change Coming

via the Detroit News,

Ilitch also spoke about his ownership of the Red Wings and the team’s sudden attendance challenges. He blamed “scheduling” boredom for fan disinterest and indicated that changes in the NHL schedule will be forthcoming in the 2008-09 season.

“You’re gonna be able to see a lot of teams,” Ilitch said, implying that the division-heavy scheduling of past seasons will give way to greater diversity. “This is history. This will be the last year with this type of structure, I think.”

I hope he gets his way.

Me thinks Mike might be hitting the hookah a little too much lately if he believes that there is a direct cause/effect relationship between attendance and schedule.  Don’t get me wrong, I too am all for giving the heave-ho to the ridiculous schedule.  And perhaps, having Sid, A-O, and some Eastern Conf. O-6 teams on the schedule would bump the attendance numbers some.  More likely though the Wings attendance is more directly affected by the simple economic theory of Supply/Demand.  I would wager that if Uncle Mike thought of lowering his ducat price some, he would probably fill more seats.  But that’s just me!!!

Praise the hockey gods—its almost time to drop the puck!!!!
