Phaneuf became just the latest 22-year-old — just emerging from his entry-level contract - to cash in on his potential as opposed to his current production. Because for all the things that Phaneuf does well — he shoots, he hits — he’s still learning the art of playing defence. This is not mean as a slight either — few defencemen of his age and relative inexperience level can contribute the sort of invisible minutes that characterize the true greats at the position, and in this day and age, that starts with the Detroit Red Wings’ Nicklas Lidstrom, who is putting up his usual numbers in another Norris Trophy-worthy season for the NHL’s top team.
