Is The Game Too Fast

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,
Maybe it’s time to frame the discussion about what’s going on by asking the question: Is the game of hockey, played at the NHL level, too fast for its own good?
There’s little doubt that the league, in the post-lockout era, is collectively faster than ever. The players are bigger, stronger and fitter. The equipment has never been more evolved. Attempts to get obstruction out of the game have largely succeeded, meaning there is flow and speed again through the neutral zone, which wasn’t always the case in the dark days prior to the lockout when the clutch-and-grab style trumped all others.
The unhappy byproduct of all this speed, however, is that the game changed again — and it became all about reaction and instinct….

Definitely food for thought. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of assuming that newer is always better.
Certainly makes it easier to appreciate the very best players who can slow the game down and make an opponent look silly.
Also glad to hear that Brett Hull realizes how much he still has left to learn. Bodes well fro the Dallas organization.

The game is fine, and Thermablades aren’t designed to make you a faster skater—“fast” comes from your leg strength and skating stride. Thermablades are designed to help you accelerate through those “first five steps” to whatever your top speed is a little faster, cut tighter turns, and both reduce muscle fatigue and help you get a more consistent “feel” on less than stellar ice with ruts and gouges in it.

Wait a minute. I thought the game was slowing down this year, that we were having all these 1-0 and 2-1 slogfests, that obstruction was “back.” The hockey media’s been telling me this all year. Didn’t the FanHouse just spend the past week crapping themselves over the Return of the Old NHL?
Make up your minds, hockey media. The game’s too fast, the game’s too slow, whatever. Just figure out what you think and let me know.
