Is The Northwest NHL Worthy?

from Chris Daniels of King5.com,
The Coyotes set up the game at Everett’s Comcast Arena, the first such exhibition contest in the region in more than a decade.
“We had a couple players that played here,” said Phoenix GM Dan Maloney. “It’s one of the best junior markets in the region.”
“I think it’s a wonderful market,” agreed GM Brian Lawton, his counterpart with Tampa Bay.
But both men say it’s above their pay grade to talk about whether the NHL would be interested in moving a team to the region, or holding exhibition games here on a regular basis.
“I think this whole Northwest area is ripe for an NHL team,” said Maloney, “whether it’s Seattle, Portland, here, between, good fans.”
“One day,” said Lawton, “you never know, it’s a great market, I think it would be wonderful.”

Seattle or Portland seems like sensible destinations for a NHL team in the near future, and I’ve considered the area to be better suited than Las Vegas or Kansas City because of the vicinity to Canada. As far as I know, though I’m not an US arena expert, Portland is the only city with a potential arena.

Just under 8000 at last nights game in Everett. Inexplicably, they held Peter Mueller out of the line up! I expected most of the stars not to dress, but Mueller is the first former Silvertip to catch on and make an impact with a big club. I get it: rest them for the real games, but the fans would have given him a standing ovation to see him skate a couple of shifts at least. He was on the cover of the program, and the jumbotron showed a montage tribute that got a big cheer. They didn’t even have him come out and wave from the tunnel!
If Phoenix management treats the hometown fans that same way (not even as an afterthought), it’s no wonder nobody goes to the games there.

I really do think an NHL team would work in Seattle or Portland. Portland’s not as ripe a hockey market, but they’re certainly hungry for a team other than the JailBlazers, and the fact that they’ve stuck with that franchise through all of that proves they’ll support their local team.
