Is There Bias Against Francophones?

from Graeme Hamilton of the National Post,
With the number of hockey stars that Quebec has produced, from Maurice Richard and Guy Lafleur to Mario Lemieux and Vincent Lecavalier, one wouldn’t think racism was holding back players from the province.
But a book published Monday by former National Hockey League player Bob Sirois, examining four decades of professional drafts, comes to the explosive conclusion that francophone Quebecers are systematically thwarted by an “anti-francophone virus” plaguing the NHL.

Seems like a stupid accusation to me. Nobody outside maybe Don Cherry mentions one’s ability to speak French when it comes to hockey. If there’s a bias against Francophones, it’s likely against the QMJHL which is perceived as a league lacking defense and physicality.

There is an anti francophone bias in english Canada, which does affect the NHL, but it is no more of a bias than english Canada has against Americans, Russians, Swedes etc. This is rooted in the history of the country and is exposed by the xenophobia exhibited by Cherry and others.

When even Montreal doesn’t have many French players that just says one thing….there aren’t many quality French players! The Habs consistently draft Euros and even Americans. That says alot about the quality of Quebec hockey players.

It’s hardly the NHL’s fault that the best talent has been coming from elsewhere. Or that a guy like Lecavalier plays in the south and has maybe at times been a little underexposed.
Face it though—instead of complaining and crying “anti-francophone” like many of them do when something isn’t going their way, Quebec should grow some better NHLers.
