Mike Brophy at The Hockey News once tried to interview Tom Barrasso:
“Hi Tom.”
“Who is this?”
“Mike Brophy from The Hockey News.”
“How did you get my phone number?”
“You gave it to me.”
“No I didn’t.”
“Yes you did.”
“I did not and I am going to spend the rest of my life trying to find out how you got it. Goodbye.”My thoughts afterwards? What an ass!
And yet I sit here today thinking he should be in the Hall of Fame.

We have to stop canonizing every half-decent NHL player out there when we talk about the Hall of Fame.
Yes, Tom Barrasso won the cup. Tom Barrasso won a couple of NHL awards (Brophy includes the Jennings Trophy in the discussion! What’s next, Cechmanek and Esche being enshrined?). Did Tom Barrasso have a pretty good career? By all accounts, yes. Did he have a career that helped to define the sport of hockey? No.
Quite frankly, the standards are sometimes too low. Glenn Anderson does not deserve to be in the Hall of Fame. Next year Brophy wants Keith Primeau and Zigmund Palffy to be considered? Give me a break.

I don’t get that he wants them to be considered - just that according to the years since retirement they are eligible to be considered.

I don’t buy that. There are dozens of players who retired that year, all of whom are technically eligible. He’s tossing those names out there for a reason.
You don’t see, for example, Tommy Albelin, Darren Langdon, Vladimir Malakhov, Krzysztof Oliwa, or Jason Wiemer—all of whom retired from the Devils the same year as Mogilny.
You don’t see goons like Tie Domi, cheapshotters like Bryan Marchment, or busts like Eric Daze listed, but they are all eligible next year.
Have I made my point yet, I could go on for days…

If guys like Ciccarelli, Oates, and Gilmour can’t get in, the guys in bold don’t have a snowball’s chance. Even Andreychuk, Nieuwendyk, and Turgeon may be marginal.
