Islanders Can Learn From The Penguins

from Arthur Staple of Newsday,

They were gone, plain and simple. One of the best NHL teams of the last 30 years was packed up and ready to leave its only home, frustrated by the politics of trying to get a new arena.

“It is time to take control of our own destiny,” the team’s owner said at the time. “We will begin to explore options in cities outside Pennsylvania.”

Mario Lemieux spoke those words a little less than three years ago.

If there’s still hope for the Islanders to stay on Long Island, to stay on the spot of land they’ve occupied for 35 years, the Penguins, last night’s opponent, could serve as the best example of that hope.

This dude’s right.  All the Isles need to do is get a better GM and then get three more straight top 2 draft picks and get lucky enough for them to all be NHL ready right away and they’re on the proper track!  Bing bang boom, why aren’t they trying?!?!

Wasn’t staal a high draft pick as well?!? wink No one cares about him because he’s obviously not named eric (and scores about as much as marc).

Still...it’s going to be more interesting to see how well the Penguins drafted lower in the draft.  Plus Tangradi is a year or less away from being a beast (thanks anaheim).

May I say this...even if you get a brand new arena you have to fill the seats with WHAT YOU HAVE ON THE ICE.  Since the Islanders have basically Tavares and a plethora of Yoda-age (or frailty) goaltenders who the fans and announcers won’t even learn the name of...this is going nowhere.

They’re losing money because they suck not because they have an old arena.  Look at detroit, the joe louis arena is so incredibly outdated but you don’t hear them whining about moving to saskatoon.  Had Wang quit micromanaging things on the ice (something he knows NOTHING about) and kept Ted Nolan behind the bench doing his own thing, the Islanders would have at least been close to playoffs with a lineup of has beens and never will bes + tavares.

Do they really think Roloson is going to be able to take 40 shots a night; Biron maybe...but Roli is going to be broken 20 games in at that pace.  Imagine a team breaking 3 NHL calibre goaltenders in a year (you know Dipietro is going to chip a nail and go on IR).

This is what happens when you have no defensive buy in from your offense and they simply cherry pick at center ice waiting for a breakaway which they can’t finish.  Plus...they should bench Tavares when they play the Bruins or the Flyers because Lucic or Pronger will probably destroy him...sorry...he’s just not ready to play on a losing team without a setup man and he’s just too soft to be less than 15 ft away from the net.
