Islanders Make the Playoffs

The New York Islanders win in a shootout over New Jersey, landing the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference on the last day of the season. More later. (The Leafs Lunch show on AM640 radio should be quite entertaining Monday, wouldn’t you say?)  smile

Update 6:57pm EDT:
From TSN,

The win triggered a wild on-ice celebration by the Islanders who were seemingly out of the Stanley Cup hunt one week ago. They regrouped in front of third-string goalie Wade Dubielewicz to edge out the Toronto Maple Leafs for the last playoff berth to be decided on the final day of the regular season.
Toronto finished its season Saturday night with a 6-5 win over the Montreal Canadiens. The Maple Leafs had 91 points, one more than the Islanders.
The Islanders mission was simple: win, and they were in the playoffs and would face the top-seeded Buffalo Sabres.

Congrats to the Islanders! A well deserved berth after being written off by most (including myself) over a week ago.  Disgruntled Leafs fans can’t say the Devils mailed this one in or that Clemmonssen played poorly. They made the Isles earn this one in a thrilling fashion. Gusty goaltending by “Dubie” going with two pokechecks in the shootout. Somewhere, Johnny Bower has to be smiling.

Put simply, the Isles - not the Leafs (or my Canadiens, for that matter) deserve to be in the playoffs. Best of luck to them in the first round against Buffalo. They’re gonna need it.

You’re such a gracious hockey fan, Spector. I’m glad the NYI won the playoff berth too… but for far less generous reasons than you.

I’m not a nice person when it comes to hockey, I’m afraid. smile

Just tellin’ it like it is, Alanah, although to be totally honest, I’m not upset the Leafs were eliminated but that’s just the Habs fan in me talkin’!  wink

Rhetorical question:  How many Islanders fans are left after the massive plague of stress-induced heart attacks?  :D

As a Leafs fan I was terribly disappointed with the result today - but they being said the Isles earned their spot.  TO and MTL both messed up their chances and have no one to blame but themselves.  But really, neither of those three teams should challenge BUF in round 1…

Now, what will JFJ do to make things better?  I think the Maple Leafs made good strides this season despite the finish.  And truthfully considering the injuries and how bad Raycroft was at times they performed well.  Something to build on for sure.

LOL Great game today, never been so much of a Devils fan as I was today.  But hey, at the Leafs got to eliminate the Habs - that was our CUP wink

Pretty sad when forty years of futility can reduce a Leafs fan to consider eliminating a long-time rival from the playoffs as their Stanley Cup…;)
