Islanders Need A New Home

from Jim Baumbach of Newsday,

In order for the Islanders to get a new home, for the Islanders to remain on Long Island and not wind up as a relocated franchise to Kansas City or Seattle or some other city, Wang needs to do what Bettman did last week. He needs to speak honestly about how grave this situation is.

People close to him say he doesn’t want to play the game of making threats, but it’s not a threat if it’s real. Fans, take off your Islanders-colored glasses and look around the Coliseum. This place stinks. And no one is coming. And Wang admittedly is losing money, as much as $20 million a year, he says.

Entering last night’s game, the Islanders were last in the league in attendance, averaging 13,233 fans. But no way does that number truly reflect the amount of actual live bodies who have passed through this place this year. It’s inflated, just like some people’s evaluations of the youth on this team.
