Isles Finalize Tavares Extension, Is Bailey Next?

Shortly before 1 PM, John Tavares put pen to paper and finalized his six-year contract extension for a total of $33 million. This is a fantastic deal for both the Islanders and for Tavares. Comparing the JT deal with the recent Tyler Myers deal in Buffalo, I think the Isles get a much better value. The cap hit per season for the JT and Myers deals are the same at $5.5 million.
People can say what they want about GM Garth Snow, but he has done a terrific job of signing the Isles most important players long-term. With the recent extension signed by Tavares, the Isles have Okposo, Grabner, Moulson, and Tavares signed for at least the next three seasons. Tavares’ entry-level deal ends after this season, so his extension will begin with the 2012-2013 season.
It wasn’t widely known until two days ago that the Isles and Tavares were so close to signing a long-term extension. At this point, Garth Snow will undoubtedly turn his attention to attempting to re-sign Josh Bailey. There have been a lot of reports and rumors about what is going to happen with Bailey in the coming days. The Islanders have until 7 AM on Friday morning to agree to a contract with Bailey or he will not be with the Isles this season. Will Bailey re-sign? Will he be traded? That I do not know. If I had to put money on it, I would guess the Isles and Bailey would come to some sort of compromise and would agree to a short-term deal. I’m assuming Bailey wanted a long-term deal all summer, but at this point he can’t get too picky.
Many people thought that the Islanders would also announce Tavares as captain at his press conference this afternoon. As you know, they only announced the contract extension. I believe that the Isles will wait until after training camp to announce their new captain and, in my opinion, it will be Mark Streit.
