It Appears Chicago Should Have Beat Detroit Last Night

from Craig Custance of the Sporting News,

We had puck possession time, quality chances, we had zone time,” Quenneville said. “The only place we got beat tonight was on the board.”...

“I don’t know how the media perceives it, we don’t think there’s a gap,” said Versteeg, whose power play goal pulled the Blackhawks within one in the third period. “We think we’re right there with every team in the league. But we’re not the only team that thinks that.”...

“This was a good opportunity to take down a great team,” Sharp said. “I think we let one slip away here.”

Honestly?

The game was over when Draper roofed that shot.  That lit up the Detroit bench in a way they haven’t been lit up yet this year (and I don’t mean “lit up” in the Cabrera way).  From that point on it was clear the Hawks were in big, big trouble.  Say what you will about Vertseeg’s goal, but I never got the feeling they were going to blow the lead (for once).

Wings fans know probably better than most that taking the most shots doesn’t mean you deserve to win.  The Hawks outplayed the Wings in the first and through parts of the third when they were trying to come back, but they didn’t deserve to win that game.  The Osgood we saw last night is the Osgood we’ll see most games this season.

Ozzie definitely had the swagger last night. Good to see.

Yeah, especially when the refs call weak slashes and holds on the Wings, while ignoring blatant high sticks and holds by the Hawks. The NHL’s continual efforts to selectively apply its own rules in order to “level the ice” make me want to barf.

Shots were even through two periods, the Hawks only outshot the wings as a result of the wings conservative play in the third with a 2 goal lead.  The difference in the game was the Wing’s PK and Osgood - it feels really good to be able to say that again.

Wrong
The Wings were outshot 12-7 in the first and 15-4 in the 3rd.
Very sloppy play and a lucky win for us.
