It Could Happen Again Next Year

Fan590 radio in Toronto had a reporter/friend of Forsberg’s on yesterday. He said Forsberg wants to play in a city that he feels he is comfortable in and sign only for this season. He would basically showcase himself to other teams for next year, showing he is in playing shape.
Of course, he could do exactly what he is doing now, wait until next February to play, unless the NHL steps in with some type of ruling.

The logical extension is that all the best players: Lecavalier, Crosby, Ovechkin, Kovalchuck, et al become free agents, with NO team afiliations.
They live 9 months of the year in Maui.
Then in February, they go on the block to the highest bidder.
They play 2 or 3 months, make big bucks, then fly back to Maui.
Sweet!

Roberto Luongo could do it, too. What a nice free agent pickup for the playoffs!

The things players are doing now, I just keep losing respect. The NHL needs to close this loophole. Is it a good idea that a team can get to the cap floor and get a record just good enough to get into the playoffs, play through all but 20 or so games, and then hire a few playoff ringers for paltry salaries to save owners money, or if the teams are near the cap limit to give the GMs cap space?
Well, it’s basically what Anaheim’s done twice, maybe not waiting to the trade deadline but certainly not far off from being the BS discussed here. Hockey’s had it rough enough, being too expensive for many to play, and with plenty of bad raps from crime and certain less-than-ideal players. The last thing it needs is loophole BS like this that takes so much away from the game.
