It Runs In The Family

from Doug Ward at NHL.com,

“First and foremost,” Kelly says of his father, “he had an engine — meaning a voice — that set him apart. The raw power of his voice was perfect for hockey. It’s a game of excitement and he could convey that, just with his voice. And he was very passionate about his job.”
Kelly had a way of making his listeners feel like they were at a game, sitting next to an old friend who happened to love hockey more than anything else. Because he cared so much about the games, we did too. Hockey was just better when Dan Kelly was calling the action.

As a left coaster, I never really had a chance to hear the elder Dan Kelly behind the mic. I think the occassional old Canada Cup highlight doesn’t offer enough time for me to get the big picture.

I’ve seen a few Blackhawks games done by young Dan Kelly. He seems okay, doesn’t really stick out to me one way or the other.

But for John Kelly, the word that springs to mind is ‘awful’. I think he might be the only hockey play-by-play man I find to be consistently annoying (analysts are another story).
