It’s Not About No-Touch Icing

From Ken Campbell at The Hockey News,

It was about as predictable as an episode of Three’s Company. The moment Kurtis Foster of the Minnesota Wild went hurtling into the boards and broke his leg last week trying to beat Torrey Mitchell of the San Jose Sharks to the puck, the usual hue and cry came from the hockey community calling for an immediate move to no-touch icing.

The loud dresser with the loud mouth who rules Canada during the first intermission on Saturday night was, of course, first in line, continuing to beat a nag that he has had for years.

How noble.

*If you need a reminder, Campbell’s piece is partly in reference to this clip from Don Cherry on the latest Coach’s Corner.

Cherry gave a reason for the difference.  Campbell just didn’t want to hear it I guess. The idea of choice may not be the strongest of reasons but Cherry still explained his viewpoint which is completely opposite to what you’d think from reading Campbell’s column.

Hopefully he checks this site and decides to review the Coaches Corner clip before getting back on his own soap box.  Beacuse let’s face it, someone railing against the people railing against the abolishment of touch icing by using the fighting argument was pretty darn predictable.

Talk about predictable. The “Hockey” News is against anything Don Cherry has to say. Typical knee jerk reaction and anti-fighting screed. You would think that they would find common ground on player safety.

The “plaid wonder” has already stated that the difference is that Foster really has no choice, but to make the proper “hockey” play and touch the puck. Fighting is still between willing combatants on equal footing.

I agree with you both. And it’s ironic that Campbell can talk about Cherry’s comments as being predictable, when his own response to Cherry’s perspective was as knee-jerk a reaction as could be.
