James Neal Hit On Derek Dorsett Tonight

Neal received five for boarding and a game misconduct.

added 11:56pm, from Richard Durrett of ESPNDallas,

James Neal will have a hearing with NHL officials on Friday morning in regards to his boarding penalty on Derek Dorsett in the second period. Neal hit Dorsett in the back and Dorsett’s head hit the glass. He was helped off the ice. Neal was given a 5-minute major penalty and a game misconduct.

“I didn’t have any intent to injure him,” said Neal, who watched the rest of the game from the dressing room area. “I hope he’s OK.”

You don’t hit guys tied up on the boards. It serves no purpose. Good call on the ice.

I’d like to see Majors handed out more often. Wouldn’t mind seeing a game suspension out of this sort of thing too.

+1 Nate. That’s been my argument with this debate all along. Not even so much suspensions, but let’s make it an automatic penalty if you:
- Hit a guy’s head (with elbow, shoulder, whatever)
- Hit a guy’s blind-side/from behind (we already have a penalty, it’s just not called when it should be)

I’ll bet if you make those both automatic double-minors, and give the ref discretion to call a major and misconduct, players would start looking out for each other pretty quickly, and we wouldn’t see so many head injuries.

No intent my eye…he turned down a fight earlier in the game from Dorsett (Dorse was trying to finish what Brassard started a year ago).  Then took such an obvious run at Dorsett that the Blue Jackets bench had time to try to shout warnings to Dorsett.

Neal’s a p.o.s.

Isn’t it simple enough to determine intent?  If you don’t intend to injure a player then you don’t board him head first into the glass. Judging from the replay he made no atttempt to slow down and hit a player square across the name and numbers.

quit being baby’s everyone. THIS IS HOCKEY, he got his penalty and expressed his concern. if you’re rolling around on ice i would imagine it might be a bit difficult to know exactly how something will play out with another human on skates. chill out and quit expressing damnation for something you clearly know nothing about and have probably never experienced.
