COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired center Jason Williams from the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for defenseman Clay Wilson and San Jose’s sixth round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft previously acquired by Columbus in exchange for Jody Shelley on January 29, 2008, club General Manager Scott Howson announced today.

Hitchcock is going to despise Williams. Talk about a floater. His play away from the puck is non-existent and his defensive abilities are severely lacking.
The Thrashers have picked up 2 AHL d-men in 2 days to help bolster the Wolves blueline. Sounds like Atlanta might be keeping Valabik up and moving someone else. I’m hopeful it’s Schneider, but it could very well be Havelid (which will be unfortunate).

This could be a very good deal for Columbus...IF Jason plays up to his potential. In his last year in Detroit, Williams never played “gritty” enough to suit Mike Babcock. And when he played on the point on the power play, he could be every bit as bad at holding pucks in as Sammy is now. But he’s quick and he’s a good puck handler. It’ll be interesting to see how Hitchcock uses him.
