Jeremy Roenick Signs with the Sharks

From TSN,

Jeremy Roenick is not retiring after all.
NHL sources tell TSN that the veteran centre has signed a one-year contract with the San Jose Sharks for $500,000.
Roenick spent last season with the Phoenix Coyotes, recording 28 points in 70 games.  He had suggested during the summer that he would likely retire.

Update 1:17pm ET
From the SJ Sharks,

San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has signed Group III unrestricted free agent center Jeremy Roenick to a one-year contract.
“Jeremy Roenick is a tremendous competitor and he has a great love for the game of hockey,” said Wilson. “We feel he can add something to our talented group of players on our club and we feel that this is an environment where Jeremy can be successful.”

added 5:12pm, from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

One would imagine Roenick is the last player Wilson or coach Ron Wilson (no relation) would want on board.
Where the Sharks are quietly confident and by the book, Roenick has often appeared bigger than the game and certainly bigger than his team and teammates.
Roenick insisted he will be “camouflaged” on this Sharks team, invisible to the outside eye while doing good in the dressing room and on the ice.
“He knows he’s coming here to play hockey. The other stuff is not what it’s all about,” Doug Wilson said. “We don’t expect any distractions.”

If he gets 10 goals, 15 assists and the Sharks win the Cup he punches his ticket Toronto.

Which of those three is the biggest if?

I love JR...circa 1995. I fail to see what value he provides now, to the Sharks or any other team. Maybe he can serve as a lightning rod for Wilson, so Patty-cakes doesn’t get his feelings hurt?

Umm, what? I don’t get this signing at all. We’re set for the first three lines at center with Thornton, Marleau, and Goc. And JR played and whined his way off the roster in Phoenix. Phoenix!

The worst part? The Bay Area has better restaurants to tempt JR out of the press box when he’s benched....

Did Doug Wilson get hit in the head with a puck or something?

It’s a smart move by San Jose for the additioanl attention brought to the team while he tries to achieve the mark. But did anyone else catch that instead of signing him for the league minimum (which he said he would accept to achieve the milestone) that they signed him for $500,000?

I can’t believe they signed this guy!  We were building towards some great chemistry on my team and we screw it up with a whiner!  I guess if you look at the teams he was playing on, I can kind of understand why his numbers droped so dramactically (Kings, Coyotes) but come on.  I sure hope Wilson knows what he’s doing.
