Jets’ Evander Kane retroactively diagnosed with a concussion

Proof that the science of diagnosing and treating concussions remains in its infancy: the Winnipeg Sun’s Paul Friesen reports that the now Twitter-inactive Evander Kane, who played for the Jets on Tuesday, had been concussed sometime during his 10g-game goal-less streak, but he kept playing because the team didn’t know that he had a concussion:

Kane’s return to the Winnipeg Jets lineup Tuesday night was marked by the revelation he may have been hurt as much as seven weeks ago, and that he played another 14 games before finally being diagnosed and told to stay away from the rink. In his first public comments since being sidelined Jan. 20 Kane said his best guess is a series of hits did the damage.

“The hit that probably rung the bell the most was against the Islanders a while ago (Dec. 20),” Kane said. “It didn’t really bother me too much. I got over it the next day. No symptoms or anything.”

A month later, Kane says, he hit his head on the ice against Buffalo, a relatively “harmless” hit that made his brain “rattle a little bit.”

Continued, and this does not speak poorly regarding the Jets’ medical staff: as the GLobe and Mail’s Sean Gordon and David Shoalts’ pair of articles on diagnosing concussions and concussion-related neck injuries more or less reiterate this point.

We really are at a comparable point to the early 80’s, when endoscopic surgery was about to teach us that you don’t need to wreck someone’s knee to fix it, and I hate to say it, but Gary Bettman’s right for once: the NHL is doing its damnedest to keep up with an area of medicine that’s a good 5-10 years from from where we ant it to be right now.
