from David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail,
John Ferguson has made a bold move with an eye to capturing the next big thing in hockey — he offered up-and-coming superstar John Tavares a contract to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs’ farm team….
By offering a deal for at least three years or longer, the source said Ferguson hopes to convince Tavares to remain Leaf property and opt out of the NHL draft. Tavares is eligible for the 2009 entry draft.
thanks to a KK reader for the pointer…

JFJ is going to make a lot of enemies if this was too happen…. its a sneaky way to ensure you get your player, and the NHL should look at it.
I think Tavares shouldnt be allowed to become a UFA if he refuses to sign after 2 years.

won’t happen. AHL has the same age limit as the NHL and I highly doubt that the AHL would subvert the authority of the NHL and allow Tavares to play.
The only way Tavares will play pro hockey is if he wins a lawsuit to be eligible…or if Vince McMahon starts the XHL.

I just expanded on this in more detail here, but I think it’s a possibility for Tavares. Yes, the period in the NHL is undesirable, but he will get compensated for that sacrifice by the Leafs for his loyalty.

NHL.com reports that JFJ need not even try this move. This is a good thing. JFJ knows he’s at death’s door as the Leafs’ GM, and is trying to subvert the system to ‘steal’ an amazingly talented player. Great way to subvert the system: he could probably get in some huge amounts of money for him, not burdened by the NHL cap in the AHL, or find some other form of compensation. It is really a shame to see people always trying to cheat the system, or twist it into something it’s not.

It’s certainly an intriguing move, but seeing as how the Leafs have done over the past couple of years, they’ll probably end up with that first pick anyway…
