John Ferguson Sr. has passed away at the age of 68.
The five-time Stanley cup winner succumbed to his second bout with cancer on Saturday at his home in Windsor, Ontario.
‘‘On behalf of my entire family, I’d like to thank the many friends, professional colleagues, medical personnel, and hockey fans who have supported us through this difficult time. Your expressions of sympathy have helped bring comfort to us. Your kind words have helped strengthen us.’’ John Ferguson Jr. said in a statement.
Ferguson’s son, John Ferguson Jr., is the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The San Jose Sharks organization is greatly saddened by the news that NHL legend and Sharks Special Assistant to the General Manager John Ferguson passed away today following a valiant battle with cancer.
“We have lost a very beloved member of the San Jose Sharks family today,” said Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson. “John Ferguson was one of the most beloved figures to ever represent the Sharks, as well as the entire National Hockey League. His sense of class, grace and love of the game of hockey is legendary among those who were fortunate enough to know and work with him. We will always carry his spirit with us and never forget the impact he has had in the success of this franchise. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Ferguson family.”

A quote from Gordie Howe, who was once asked who the toughest hockey competitors were….
“Tim Horton was stronger than a damn bull. He’d lock you up and you’re done for. And Bobby Hull could kill you. I think Bobby Orr could kill you. I think Wayne Gretzky could kill you with his goals and workmanship. That’s a different kind of toughness. An all-around strong guy and very aggressive, but I never had to tussle with him. The best man I saw was John Ferguson with Montreal.”

I was born and have grown up in windsor, ontario. I have delivered pizzas here at Capri in Lasalle to pay my way through University. It was an honour to have John Feruson Sr. and Jr. come into the pizzeria or to deliver to Sr.‘s house on a road just two over from my own. Hockey is part of my blood and my community. He shall be missed.
