Judging Bryan Murray

from Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen,

Bryan Murray has been general manager the Ottawa Senators for three years and seven months.

It only seems longer — for two reasons.

1. Those three-plus years have been tumultuous, with the team on the verge of missing the playoffs for the second time in three seasons after nine straight post-season appearances.

2. Hired as head coach in 2004, Murray has been in the organization for nearly seven years, leaving the impression he has been managing longer than he has.

We list here every significant transaction the Senators have made under Murray’s guidance. Judge for yourself the results, keeping in mind there is nothing static about management moves. The true impact often takes years, which is why a compelling case can be made that the moves of Murray’s predecessor, John Muckler, have had as much bearing on the Senators’ current standing as the Murray moves over the past three-plus years.
