Keenan Behind The Bench In Calgary

from Darren Dreger and Bob McKenzie at TSN,

It looks like “Iron Mike” could be back in business behind the bench of an NHL team.
Sources tell TSN that Mike Keenan is on the verge of becoming the new head coach of the Calgary Flames.
While the Flames declined to comment when contacted by TSN today, sources confirm Keenan is currently in Calgary and if all goes as expected, the well-traveled NHL executive and coach could be announced as the head coach of the Flames as early as Thursday.

Guess they don’t want any free agents…can’t say I’d be interested to play underneath Mike Keenan.

Who’s GM of Calgary?  Sutter?  If this is true, he must be very confident in his job security because Iron Mike has shown over and over that he’s not satisfied with just the coaching position.

This one comes as a shock, but just yesterday I was thinking about Playfair and even went arounf the web looking for anything on him…
This bit from Larry Wigge on Keenan/Amonte back in Feb/06.

Keenan ridiculed the highly skilled Amonte, saying he was soft and didn’t have the mental toughness it took to help the Rangers win a Stanley Cup.
“I remember when he called me a rich kid from Boston and said I’d never worked a day in my life,” Amonte still recalls. “He didn’t know that my father stopped working in 1978 after triple-bypass surgery and that I was working in landscaping since I was 13.
Amonte still looks at Keenan as sort of an ogre—and a guy who took an opportunity to win a Stanley Cup away from him.
Amonte was once a long-haired, fast-lane player. But soft? A peripheral player? Not even close.

I’m going to reserve judgement until a) it’s official, and b) Sutter speaks about it.  My initial thought was wow…how will those two ever co-exist, but Sutter’s moves have always been extremely calculated, so this one seem at first glance to be a little off center for him!

If he does make it into the GM position, how many bags of pucks will he get when he trades Kipprusoff?

Seems a bit strange, to say the least.

Sutter was assistant coach for Keenan in Chicago so obviously he feels comfortable working with him. Sutter has no plans of returning behind the bench and Keenan has the same mindset as he does.

Also, Sutter is firmly entrenched as Flames GM and is as strong-willed as Keenan. If ‘Iron Mike’ oversteps his boundary, Sutter will smack him down…hard.

He also took the Chicago Blackhawks to the Finals in 1988.

No, he didn’t, unless they’ve changed their minds about who really won Gretzky’s fourth Cup just recently.  I know he means ‘92, but come on, proofread this stuff.

Well flames had a good run, fun too see them thrive a few years. I wonder who is first to be traded for scraps.
