I wouldn’t be shocked to see Nikolai Khabibulin become an Av at some point. No, probably not before the season. But come trade deadline time - if Huet is playing well in Chicago and Peter Budaj isn’t here - I think it will be an easy call that the Avs would be among the highest bidders for his services.

I suppose Khabibulin does fit the age requirement for the Avs. They’re Chris Chelios away from being a beer league team.

Pretty funny, but you’re talking about age only, right? Cheli is probably more ripped than half the twenty-somethings in the league.

I agree, olderthanchelios, the dude can still give a team better minutes than 75% of the D-men out there. Tampa might be well-served in giving him a look; he could help steady a very inexperienced, mediocre defense that is probably going to be shredded during the 2008-09 season.

Sorry, Percy. Tampa Bay can look all they want, but I don’t think Cheli’s going anywhere. If he doesn’t play for the Wings (or they don’t offer him a coaching job), I think he’d play for the Motor City Mechanics before he’d play for another NHL team.

I see Chicago and Colorado fighting for that 8th spot next year. Why would either team make this trade if that was the case. Better idea...contact Boston and take Manny Fernandez off our hands. He’s better than anything you got right now. Just throw in Leopold and its a deal. The salaries are pretty much a wash.....

Dream on Dater. If the Avs management was serious about getting goaltending they A) wouldn’t have wasted a dime on Raycroft. B) would have gone hard after Huet. C) maybe thrown down a few hundred thousand for Conklin -he did do pretty well carrying the Pens when MAF was out.
In short there were plenty of opportunities to get a better goalie than the one they did get. Dater-tot’s drinking the Kool-Aid if he thinks the Avs are going to suddenly have a change of heart and splurge for Khabibulin.
