from Jeff Z. Klein of Slap Shot at the NYT,
According to an article in Tuesday’s Sovietskiy Sport, KHL president and Gazprom export CEO Alexander Medvedev wants the Columbus Blue Jackets to compensate CSKA Moscow for the Jacks’ signing of 18-year-old first-round draft choice Nikita Filatov. When asked how much the compensation should come to, he answered, “At least half a million dollars.”

...he doesn’t pay, Columbus would be forced to pay.
It is a logical thing of course. Russia did educate him and train him in hockey. Yes, he had no current contract, but CSKA has his rights, just as NHL teams currently have the rights to their unsigned RFAs, even if they are still negotiating. At least that’s how I imagine Russia’s rules are, although they could be more stringent than the NHL rules.

Well then how about the Russians paying Columbus compensation for Svitov who was under contract to Columbus when he left

Anyone else think Filatov looks a bit like Meg Ryan? That notwithstanding, the puck bunnies in Columbus would probably be happy to put up the $500k themselves just to get him over here.

Kukla’s Korner is always a free service for readers, but it costs some money to maintain. If you’re ever in a position to donate a few dollars to help out, we’d be very appreciative.

I don’t think 500k would be a problem. He’ll get plenty in bonuses that can be used to pay CSKA.
