It has long been my goal here at KK to attract direct advertisers to Kukla’s Korner. That goal has was met when Black Aces Hockey inquired about advertising on KK. You may have noticed their ads running throughout KK, A2Y and Canucks & Beyond.
The folks at Black Aces wanted to participate in one of the KK games that are occasionally offered to KK members. They will be giving away a Black Aces hat and every KK member is eligible to win if you can answer this question.... What is your favorite hockey number?
Ah, no real, correct answer. But do put a number in the comment section of this post to be eligible and maybe tell us why you like the number. The contest will end Wednesday night at 11:59pm ET, so be quick. If you are not a KK member, just look at the left sidebar under KK Sections and register for free. A random drawing will be held on Thursday and the winner will be announced at that time. Good luck and previous KK winners may participate.
A little about Black Aces Hockey…
Astute hockey fans know that the Black Aces are not a team, yet every pro team has Black Aces. The Black Aces are the extra players a hockey team carries that have to be ready to play at any time. You have probably heard hockey announcers and comentators praising the efforts of the Black Aces and their importance to the team. Ever wonder why they are called the Black Aces? It’s a classic hockey story and you can find the answer to this question at BLACKACESHOCKEY.COM along with great looking Black Aces Hockey apparel and much more.
added 4:27pm on 1/10/07, moving this to the forefront to remind you the contest ends tonight. Original post was 10:30am yesterday.
Update, 1/11/07, The winner of the Black Aces Hat is johnnygloveside. Congrats and thanks to everyone for participating.

#22 Dino Ciccarelli- best little man the game has seen

Gotta go with #26 in tribute to my childhood favorite Montreal Canadien Mats Naslund, a vastly underrated player in his day. Also, he wore a Torspo helmet and next to Gilbert Perreault’s Cooper XL7 the Torspo Helmet was the ugliest lid in the league!

I like #3, I had that number when I played hockey in my much younger days, and for a short time in a beer leauge.

The number 9 to be sure
Obviously Gordie Howe, The Rocket, etc…
but also present in 19 ie: yzerman, naslund (the markus sort), sakic, doan, brad richards, etc…
And of course it’s present in that 99 jersey.
Usually if a player picks a 9 (or 9 related number) it takes a lot of confidence that he’s a good strong player and can thus retain that number. If not, a batter player on the team may just come by a pluck the number haha.
ps: sidney crosby has also worn #9 in international play, I believe.

#5. I love the way Norris (as IwoCPO use to call him in the old Glossary) sees everything on the Ice.

#16. It was a good year for me as a kid...I hung with the number because of the age associated with it. As I grew up with sports, I shared that number with Trevor Linden, Joe Montana and my favorite basketball player, Johnny Davis.

I have two. 5 and 9.
5 for Nicklas Lidstrom.
9 for Gordie Howe.
The 9 in Steve Yzerman’s 19.
The 9 in Stergei Fedorov’s 91.
They’re why I wear #59.

I’ve always been a fan of single digit #’s. Then there’s the reducable elimination from that. Grabbing #1 is a bit pretensious and asking to be smacked down. #7 is out because that’s too superstisious and may backfire on your game. I’ve never really liked #9 but have acquired a respect for the number because of the players who’ve worn it and developed an aura around it., but it’s still not really for me. For some reason, even numbers seem more approachable so I’ve always vied for good old # 8

#13 Mr. Kozlov was my favorite player back in the day. He would come blazing down the side boards, slam on the breaks and cut to the middle. Doesn’t sound like much, but thats a great play. I havn’t seen many Atlanta games, so I don’t know if he still does it or not. The fact that Datsyuk who is by far the best puck handler in the NHL has it now only makes it better.
It’s also the number I wore throughout youth hockey because it was always the last number picked.
