via Dan Wood of Ducks Blog,
The Ducks are set to announce shortly the signing of unrestricted free-agent center Saku Koivu to a one-year, $3.25 million contract.
added 1:57pm, ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed center Saku Koivu to a one-year contract. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deal were disclosed.
“Saku Koivu’s character and leadership qualities are unquestioned,” said Executive Vice President/General Manager Bob Murray. “He is a skilled playmaker and we are thrilled to add him to our team.”
added 2:45pm, Michael Russo of Russo’s Rants on Saku,
If somebody doesn’t want to play here, he doesn’t; there’s no use chasing your own tail and throwing money and term if there are other factors at play. He could’ve gotten a better deal in Minny — sources say the deal would have been in the $4 million annual range on a two-year deal, in the $3-million-plus range on a three-year deal.
As I warned you before last weekend, the Wild started to get the impression things were heading south with negotiations with Koivu. To me, this contract with Anaheim shows two things — 1) he wants to play with buddy Teemu Selanne and only signed for one year because Selanne claims this time he will really retire in one year; 2) there were serious concerns amongst the Koivu Bros. about playing together.
more on what the Wild do now…

I guess you’ve gotta chase money at least once in your career.

I find it truly bizarre that Mikko and Saku had problems about playing with each other. Makes you wonder how healthy their relationship is/isn’t.

Um… What?
He signed for $1.5M less than he made last year…

Anaheim is a stay-at-home defenseman away from being strong enough to overtake Detroit in the West.

Their relationship is likely fine, but the question might have been about the older brother going to the younger brother’s team, where he has a leadership role and Saku wouldn’t. Saku might be used to kind of being “in charge” personally, but not carrying that over into a professional environment might be tricky for one of the brothers. They aren’t all that close in age, I think.
I think it’s a smart decision - more families shoudl think about how well they can get along professionally before deciding to start businesses together. It might sound like a good idea to start a business with your brother, but sometimes it turns into a disaster.

I posted a story around trade deadline day that quotes Saku may not want to play in Minny because he felt it would take attention away from his brother.
Guess he still felt the same way....

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHA
But seriously, when Philly gets a giant, violent #1 d-man it doesn’t make a difference, however Anaheim gets a little stay at home and they’re going from 8th seed to #1?

Conisdering the Ducks took out the Sharks and nearly took out Detroit, yeah this type of thing can make a big difference when you only had one scoring line. However the big question for the Ducks next year will be defense. With Pronger and Beauchemin gone, will they have a strong enough D to stop the Red Wings, Sharks, Canucks, and/or the Blackhawks?

re: Saku not wanting to join his brother
Speaking from personal experience, it can be tough playing with a sibling no matter how great your relationship is off the playing field. This isn’t like the Sedins who are used to playing together because they’re the same age, or the Niedermayers who play different positions and don’t compete for a job. These two play the same position and there’s a 9-year age gap. Think about it. You’re the younger brother and you’ve just established a place for yourself on a team. Then free agency comes around and your older, more well-known brother considers joining your team and that might push you down the ladder. How would you feel about your brother then?

Poor Montreal fans - the ones with brains must feel like their heart was just ripped out of their collective chest right now.
