Kolzig Faces Autism Head-On

from Damien Cristodero of the St. Petersburg Times,
Christin Kolzig was trying to hold a conversation when son Carson climbed into her lap and whispered in her ear. “Can we do it now?” he asked. “I can’t now,” Christin said. But Carson, who turns 8 on Jan. 1, was persistent in his quest for help setting up a favorite video game on his laptop. Christin laughed like she was being tickled and called husband, Olie, to get their son settled. “You learn to appreciate these moments,” Christin said. “You just realize what a miracle it is to have happy kids. In our world, you forget about that stuff.”
The Kolzigs’ world changed forever when Carson, at 15 months, was diagnosed with autism. It was devastating, said Olie, the Lightning’s backup goaltender. And it took time for the family, which now includes daughters Kendall, 6, and Ashlyn, 5, to realize what it faced.

It’s shocking how pervasive autism has become….one in 110 children born, I believe. Ten years ago, I knew no one that had autism. Today I know at least six families with affected children. If I were to count friends of friends, it would be far more. I wish the best of luck to Kolzig and others.

The large proportion of children with autism includes a wide spectrum of the disorder, and that skews the numbers a bit. In previous generations children now diagnosed with autism might have been merely considered “slow” or “a little off” but now their disorder has a name. The good thing in that is that by considering the full spectrum of the condition the medical research can better tease out the contributing factors, and progress is being made. Some research actually ties autism into factors such as advanced parental age. Advanced maternal age has always been known to be a risk factor for conditions such as Downs syndrome, but now advanced paternal age is emerging as a possible factor in some disorders, too. And of course the best part is increasing knowledge about how to help families cope better with the disorder and provide a better environment for their children.

I had no idea, thanks for sharing this story. Kolzig always gave the appearance of a class act and I think his child will get the benefits of this. I have a young son of 18 months and couldn’t bear it if he had such a trying disorder. Best wishes to his family!
