via Tom Gulitti tweet,
This is a little late because others are saying it’s done too, but I did get second confirmation on league thumbs up.
added 2:33pm, Another tweet from Tom,
There’s a chance that there might not be an official announcement from Devils on signing until Saturday
added 2:47pm, Tom tweets again,
I hate to do this, but i’m told now that it is not done yet with NHL.
added 2:58pm, Another Tom tweet,
I’m told NHL has not completed review and it’s more than a formality, but latest proposal addressed previously rejected concepts.
added 3:07pm, Darren Dreger tweets,
NHL says it has not approved any deal between Kovalchuk and the Devils. The saga continues.
added 3:50pm, Multiple reports state the Devils have indeed filed a contract with the NHL and the League has five days to approve/reject. Hopefully they decide quickly.
added 4:18pm, via Darren Dreger tweet,
15 years, around $100 mil is close…according to source. It’s going to be interesting to see if the league approves NJ’s latest attempt.

I think Alan, everyone justs wants this over, before the weekend comes.
Don’t need another weekend of waiting on Kovy.

Oh, I know. It just seemed like every other word was “tweet.” Just making light of it on an otherwise boring day in the middle of August.
Sigh. When is October, again? :\

“15 years, around $100 mil is close”
I find that sentence to be hilarious considering his original denied contract.

Is this contract approved or just approved for review until such time the NHL deems it is no longer acceptable? Or has it just been registered until arbitration determines it is valid or not?

PS
Does this now become collusion if the league and not the individual teams takes part in negotiating and structuring contracts?

“...Does this now become collusion if the league and not the individual teams takes part in negotiating and structuring contracts? “
If you want to be the devil’s advocate and argue that I suppose you could, but the NHL isn’t neogtiating anything, they’re just accepting or denying a contract based on the CBA and its involved precedents.

Ilya Kovalchuk is a great player. His play for the devils during the post season was not anything special. It’s hard to say if the Delivs are a good playoff team. The Devils got outed by the Flyers and in the regular season the Flyers simply owned the devils. They were 7-3 or something crazy like that against New Jersey. Thats why I think its hard to tell if they are a good playoff team. They were never getting past Philly, perhaps they could have got out round one if they played another team. The Flyers had there numbers. Sometimes there are just match ups like that.
Whether Kovalchuk is good for the devils is hard to say. Im sure he will get some extra wins for New Jersey during the regular season. He is just that type of player. Similiar to Alexander Ovechkin, I fear that Ilya Kovalchuk may stunt the Devils come next post season.
Does anyone think that New Jersey would be better off using that estimated 6 million on two or three other pieces to their puzzle?

Not sure which summer story was more painful - Kovalchuk 2010 or Heatley 2009. I just don’t care anymore…
