Kovalchuk Gets A Game

Ilya Kovalchuk gets a one game suspension for his hit on Rozsival last night.

After the game Kovalchuk tried to explain the hit. “I just tried to finish my check, and he kind of turned right before I tried to hit him,” he said.

“He hit the boards; it wasn’t my [intention] to hurt him or anything,” added the 24-year-old. “It’s a contact sport. I wasn’t trying to kill anybody.”

added 5:27pm, via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

“Personally, what I can’t judge is they see these every night in the room. I’m only looking at one circumstance. I don’t think it’s that bad, but they’re the ones that review it. They see it every night,” said Waddell when asked if he thought the NHL would suspend Kovalchuk. “He has no history at all, that all weighs in your favor.”

The AJC also reports Kovy received a fine.

My first reaction when I saw the hit happen (live, not just now) was, “If it was Hollweg they’d throw him out.” Imagine my surprise when they actually did throw Kovalchuk out!

Watching the replays, Roszival didn’t turn just as Kovalchuk hit him.  He was facing the boards for a while, and Kovy aimed for the number on his back.  I know it’s a dangerous play, but since there was no injury I didn’t think there’d be a suspension.

One reason he may have gotten only one game is that the NHL didn’t want the embarrassment of someone playing in the All Star game while under league suspension.

also remember that Ilya had given Roszival a nice elbow ten seconds earlier.  Even more important, Ilya cowered after he hit Roszival.  While everybody fought with each other, Ilya had snuck away and didn’t even answer for himself. 1 game isn’t enough.
