Alex Kovalev delivered an elbow to Holweg that was missed by the refs. Hollweg’s first shift after the hit, delivered a hit from behind on Sergei Kostitsyn.
Ryan Hollweg was given five for boarding and a game. According to Mike Emrick, this type of penalty also brings an automatic one game suspension.
Watch video of both hits…

I believe Hollweg is under NHL watch and will likely receive at minimum three games.
I feel that Kovalev should receive a fine for his elbow of Hollweg.
It is also my opinion that the officials should be fined for not calling the elbow. The two ref. system was introduced to catch this type of incident.
The puck was between Kovalev and Hollweg. Who is watching the play to ensure no hand pass, hook, etc.
The linesmen can notify the refs. of an infraction as well. Why didn’t they?
Lot of questions. No answers.

Kukla’s Korner is always a free service for readers, but it costs some money to maintain. If you’re ever in a position to donate a few dollars to help out, we’d be very appreciative.

Since he’s a repeat offender, I’m guessing Hollweg gets at least 5 games, even without an injury on the play. And he deserves every one. I’ve definitely been a defender of his, since he often gets penalty calls based on his reputation alone, but this was uncalled for, dangerous, and extremely selfish. I don’t think he’ll lose his spot in the lineup, but since Colton Orr has picked up his game enough that he’s now a better player than Hollweg, Hollweg should be the first guy to sit in the press box if the Rangers want to use Hossa or a call-up from Hartford. If Avery stays healthy, Hollweg is kind of superfluous anyway...he doesn’t even fight anymore.
As for the Kovalev elbow...I can’t believe the refs didn’t call that. Even though Tom Renney seemed to think the league should review that hit, I don’t see anything happening there.
