LA Just Doesn’t Get It

from Ian Winwood of the Guardian,

With just 30 wins this season, the LA Kings have been playing meaningless hockey since before the onset of winter. This in itself is not necessarily a problem; the Toronto Maple Leafs have been playing meaningless hockey for about 41 years and people still care about them. Of course, Kings fans care about their team too, and it would be wrong to suggest that they don’t. A total of 16,784 people travelled to the Staples Center on Tuesday night to watch a late-season game which for the home side held no promise at all.

But it’s in the wider community that this team is in trouble. If a franchise survives on the oxygen of publicity, then this is an organisation gasping for air. It would be wrong to say that Los Angeles hates a loser, simply because it takes effort to hate. If you are a loser, LA will just ignore you to death.

That was a .... fun read.

Did appreciate the “ignore you to death” line though.

This guy’s no Faulkner, that’s for sure.

He saw a crap game.  I watched it too.  It happens.  SJ didn’t need to skate hard to win, so they didn’t. I think we want SJ to finish above the Dux and helped them by throwing Cloots in net for the obligatory soft goal or two.  He delivered.  Oh yeah, he hates hockey in LA too, so Ian has a buddy who can brunch and tube together next season when he’s playing for the Knights.

Don’t underestimate the change that Brian Campbell brings to SJ’s defense, they are a different animal now.  As evidenced by their not losing a game in regulation pretty much since his arrival.

It’s fairly myopic to say that one bad game dooms all of hockey in LA from this point forward.  Get over yourself Ian.  We’ve sucked for 40 years, a few more ain’t gonna hurt us.

I deal with Brits and their commentaries all of the time and his tear down of Staples and LA Hockey is on the mild side, bordering on sublimely optimistic.  I think he’s pulling for us and this is his cry for help.  We hear you buddy.

Been a Kings STH for 5 of the 9 years Staples has been open, both up high and down low.  Nosebleeds are high, but if you’re loud enough, they hear you.  100’s aren’t bad seats, but usually corporate or vip seats with passion removed.  200’s have some good vocal people, 300’s are either hilarious or annoying depending on taste.

The Forum was much better for connecting the fans to the game with a concourse between the upper and lower seats, but alas, no luxury boxes and that’s how companies make money to pay for new arenas. Oh well, business is good, and we can’t bring back the past, so ooh it’s cavernous.  When the Kings make the playoffs again, it will be electric from top to bottom, just like most of these games the last 2 weeks while teams battle to get in.

Being a young team that has lots of potential, consistency has been the key all season.

The Kings have had more 3rd period comebacks this year than I can remember in one season, but it rarely carries over to the next game.  O yeah, young team, lots of free agents, team looking for an identity with many admitted holes to fill.

Now we’ve won 2 in a row but if that pulls us out 30th and we lose our front runner status to get Stamkos, I’ll be pissed.  We’ve gone too far to let this 1st pick slip from our grasp.

Bring on Cloots for his encore, he’ll be coming to an arena in EMEA sometime soon.

At least I can hope.
