LA Times Cutting Hockey Coverage?

According to a mole at Ben Mailer, the LA Times will stop covering most Kings & Ducks away games with a a beat writer and the NHL Column Helene Elliott writes has been put to an end.
I have noticed a big drop-off in the hockey coverage at the paper in recent months- not a good sign fro hockey fans.
Thanks to a KK reader for the pointer.

newspapers are going the way of the dinosaur. With the internet, this doesnt really mena much

First of all, newspapers are not going the way of the dinosaur, dodo or Crystal Pepsi. I say this both as a guy who believes there will always need to be someone who gathers the news for places like KK to dispense it, and as a journalist for whom a newspaper is vital for me to put food on my family (to quote our dear Commander-in-Chief).
As far as this news goes, it’s a bit depressing—Helene Elliott is one of the best hockey writers on the beat, both for her insight and her information. More and more papers are using AP reports for road games, and more and more papers in soft markets aren’t even making room for a weekly hockey column any longer. I live in a city where the Washington Post pisses all over the sport but publishes a pullout section on BMX racing. That’s the reality of the NHL’s surroundings.

It’s no doubt that journalism in one form or another will never go away. I believe newspaper subscriptions rates are down, but please correct me if I’m wrong. I too live in the Wash. Post area. While on vacation I was quite dismayed that I had to turn to the Baltimore Sun to find any NHL draft information the day after the draft, after finding zero mention of it in the Wash Post.

The LA Daily News and OC Register cover the Kings and Ducks, respectively, but the loss of Helene Elliott and Chris Foster will be felt throughout the hockey world.
Elliott’s a Hockey Hall of Fame honouree for a reason. She and Foster broke huge stories during the lockout, and Elliott’s Tuesday notes have been must-reads for years.
That’s a shame, a real shame. Elliott and Foster will make their future employers very happy, and they’ll continue to be two of the best hockey writers out there, online, in print, or otherwise.

I always enjoyed Elliott’s writing. I’ll have to keep my eyes open and see where she winds up next.

I didnt say journalism was going the way of the dionosaur, just newspapers. Of course people will still need news, but it’s going to all be put on the internet in 100 different ways, and usually with a ton more insight. Hence the reason you see writers/columnists/etc leaving newspapers in droves to go to the internet. If you’re a good writer, I’m sure you’ll have no problem keeping food on your table.

LA Times interest in the Kings dropped off when Elisha Cuthbert and Sean Avery broke up.

It’s fine by me. The coverage they did provide was complete crap. Helene Elliott’s column was the only thing worth reading. I get most of my hockey stuff from websites anyway. I just cancelled my subscription to the Times. Thanks, I’ll save my $4 per month. The Kings have a strong following and we love our team. We don’t need this rag to follow our them. The Ducks are covered in the OC Register. The Kings don’t get much coverage in the Register.
