Lack Of Interest In The New Summit Series

from the Vancouver Province,

UFA, Russia — Pfffft.
That’s Russian for the 2007 Super Series.
The eight-game series pitting Canadian junior hockey stars against their Russian counterparts in an attempt to commemorate the 1972 Summit Series just hasn’t generated much interest here.
That’s no surprise to the national Russian journalists, who are outnumbered by their Canadian counterparts in Ufa.
The games are being broadcast live on the country’s NTV-plus satellite system, which only has 560,000 subscribers. The games are then re-broadcast 35 hours later on a Russian national network.

continued and thanks to Jason Botchford of the Province who has delivered numerous stories on this series from Russia…

how foolish of the russians to sign a tv deal with a minor satellite channel that not everyone receives. thank goodness the nhl wouldn’t make that mistake… would they?

To the Russians, this is a gamble of sorts. They refused to ice their team for the next WJC, since they don’t want other countries to see what skills and plays they use, and to prevent counter-strategies from being created. So they ice their weaker, but by no means petty, players. If the Russians lose, then many people won’t care. If the Russians win, then they will find ways to put that victory to good use, and will bring up the profile of the games. Otherwise it will stay a low profile, and other factors will be blamed, perhaps bringing up the fact that they wanted NHL-Superleague level competition. Outside of the games, it just highlights the conflict between the two leagues.
