Lafleur Says Time For Koivu To Go

from Kevin Mio of Habs Inside/Out,

RDS has interviewed Guy Lafleur, again, and this time, the Habs legend let it be known he thinks the time has come for Saku Koivu to leave the Canadiens family.

Lafleur said it’s time for the Canadiens captain to go play with his brother in Minnesota. He also said that when Réjean Houle was the team’s general manager, he suggested to Houle that he should get rid of Koivu.

And he didn’t stop there. Lafleur, who never minces his words, also weighed in on the rumours that Alex Kovalev had been offered a new contract and the captaincy.

Must be Koivu wouldn’t agree to go to a hotel room with Lafleur’s son.

Why would Koivu want to stay?  All he’s done is play his butt off and represent the team with a great deal of dignity, and deal with questions about his language skills and reporters barging in to his hospital room with more grace than most people could muster - and his leadership is questioned more than almost anyone’s (although I think Sundin dealt with a lot in Toronto).

If he does wind up in Minnesota, I hope he plays so well that Montreal regrets the day they ran him off forever.  :(

Holy hell…if Koivu is chased off the team because of LaFleur who has his own personal problems to deal with - one of which is lying to the Court - then the Habs are in far more serious trouble than perceived.
