Lapierre Hit On Nichol Questioned

via TSN,

The Sharks took exception to a play in the third period where Maxim Lapierre knocked an off balance Scott Nichol sending him hard into the end boards. A scuffle between the two teams ensued.

Nichol lay on the ice for a time before getting up on his own, but he left the game and did not return.

Lapierre was not assessed a penalty on the play.

After the game Sharks’ head coach Todd McLellan told the Mercury News he thought the hit was “a missed call and a real dangerous play.”

Sharks’ defenceman Dan Boyle had a similar view.

“There was, as far as I’m concerned, a really dirty hit on our guy Scott Nichol.” said Boyle. “Pushing a guy from behind into the boards, I have not seen the reply yet, but you can paralize a guy and there is no place for that in hockey.”

How ironic - Dan Boyle complaining about a cheap hit that could paralyze another player.  “Those kind of hits don’t belong in hockey!”  How about Olympic slewfoots?  I guess those are all good…

brewski_4_youski beat me to the punch. No calls across Canada for Slewfoot to get a 15 game suspension since he was defending his “honor” against that merciless beast Semin and then to rail about dangerous hits. Really Boyle is there a kettle you should be calling black? Go in the corner, be quiet for a while and feel shame.

Boyle isn’t a part of this.  Whether he “supposedly” slewfooted someone or not.  The point is, THIS was dirty and needs to be addressed by the league.

Dan Boyle has no room to talk about dirty plays that have no place in hockey, though he is correct about this case.

I’m a habs fan and it was a dirty hit.  I also speak for more than a few habs fans when I say I wish that someone would give Lapierre the beatdown he deserves.  The guy’s an embarassment.  Last year he was one of those sandpaper players who, while you might not respect, at least they serve to get the opposition off their game.  This year he’s nothin but a straight up punk.

Players are the ones that are at the root cause of a general lack of respect for each other. Boyle may be right in condemning this particular act, but he helped to set the precedent for lack of respect and is therefore he is someone that should act the way he speaks. If true that Boyle is not part of what went on, then why is he quoted? He interjected himself into the discusssion. There is no supposition as to the slewfoot, Boyle did it, millions saw it and he was penalized for it, just not penalized enough.

It’s a bad play, but not much worse than Getzlaf did. Campbell will spin the wheel and see what happens. I say 2 games at most.

Dan Boyle complaining about a dirty hit.  That’s rich.  What’s next, Bryan Marchment complaining that someone got him with a knee?

Slewfoots dont PARALYZE people.  If you are trying to compare what is considered the hockey equivalent to the school yard table top to something that has ended careers then you have no place to talk about the dirty hits in hockey.

Yeah the dirty hit was unacceptable and the ref was standing right there and didn’t call it.  But lets not forget the HORRIBLE officiating around the league this year.  Its been an absolute disaster.  Same exact thing with the Malkin/WIllie Mitchell hit and now Mitchell is out for the year.

They Paralyze careers.  They blow ACL’s.  They are nasty, and should be an automatic 20 games.

Chris Lee is a frickin’ disgrace.  Last night’s game was very poorly officiated, both ways.

Not only was it a dangerous hit, but it was gutless.  There is no reason for that.  The NHL should make an example out dirty hits with this one, but I have zero to no faith in NHL discipline.

The LA Kings website caught up with LaPierre after practice today before the suspension was handed out to get his version of the hit:

LaPierre’s portion starts at about 3:20.

Read the Mercury News Sharks blog and see where Rob Blake Threw his own teammate under the bus. Blake was given the opportunity to discus the play with Referee Chris Lee, but chose not too. Great teammate, great captain. Great just throw your teammate under the bus.

And people wonder why the Sharks cannot win in the playoffs. A dirty cheapshot by an opposing player, not only does that player face rebuttal from Sharks players, but the Sharks Captain doesn’t even support his own teammate.
