Laraque Says Sorry For Appearing In Sexist Ad

from the CP at TSN,

NHL tough guy Georges Laraque is pumping out apologies faster than he pummels his opponents’ faces.

The Montreal Canadiens enforcer says he’s sorry for appearing in an ad being slammed as sexist.

Women’s groups have decried the ad for an alcohol drink in which Laraque plays street hockey with a group of scantily clad women.

continued and I posted the video a a few week’s back, you can view it here.

were they complaining about their ("lack") clothes or their horrendous hockey skills?

Aside from the eye candy, it was a terrible ad.  This ad makes me cringe far worse, for many reasons:

I’ve never seen a canadian woman that looked so good.  Look at those jello cups jiggle!  I’m talking about laraque of course wink

What’s worse: 1)sexism, or 2)Guys will buy a crappy tasting energy drink when the ad has sexy half naked women in crazy colored outfits or 3)Vesa Toskala’s depends ad (sorry vesa...you’re so leaky).

The KHL should apologize for putting Robert Esche into an ad.

The commercial itself portrays a sexist situation—but it doesn’t make Laraque sexist for acting in the commercial.

Furthermore, what necessarily makes the ad sexist? Do you define sexism as the belief that one sex is, in all ways, inferior to the other? Or is sexism the belief that one sex is inferior to the other in ANY, but not necessarily ALL, ways?

I don’t think the ad is sexist. Do I think it’s sleazy? Sure. But I don’t think it’s sexist. The women in the commercial are there, wearing what they’re wearing (or what they aren’t...) of their own will. They’re well aware of the plot of the commercial as well.

And frankly, the implication being that men are better at hockey than women, is true by most metrics. Sometimes science and culture create hard truths we don’t want to believe. Tough. It doesn’t make these situations sexist. In my view, what would be sexist would be to disallow the opportunity for women to participate in hockey (and other athletics). Which could very well be an issue, but that’s another argument all together. This commercial is not going down that path, so I have a hard time seeing it as sexist, or anything more or less than a cheesy commercial playing up to the fact that men like young, scantily clad women… which happens to be another fact rooted in science.

its sexist because everyone knows that laraque would have been stripped of puck if he tried a move like that.
