from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,
If the Toronto Maple Leafs fire GM John Ferguson Jr., they won’t put just anybody on the Hogtown hotseat.
The talk among league executives is the Leafs won’t make a move on the GM front unless they secure a big name—such as Mark Messier, Steve Yzerman or Ron Francis, a former Leaf—to take the reins.
“The Leafs need to have somebody with star power,” said an NHL executive.
“If they’re going to put somebody into that seat who hasn’t done it before, they need to have a marquee name.”
continued plus more NHL talk, including trade rumors…

They don’t need a marquee name as much as they need a competent manager. However famous the name is, they can’t go with a rookie and have him learn on the job. That is part of the reason they are such a mess already. They won’t get any better if the fans look at the team and say, “well, we really stink and we’re sliding toward last place and I’m sure we’ll blow the draft, too, but look! Mark Messier is in the front office in a suit! Plan the parade!”
They need to avoid names at all costs and get competence.
It’s a shame to see that Bergeron may be out for the season. Such a talented young player, and I hope he’ll be able to come back sometime.

I think that the only reason a move has not been made there is because they do not have a replacement ... as soon as they do they have to remove JFJ, along with Maurice and his entire staff.
I like Maurice, but the team needs a complete overhaul.
They (as a team) are not interested in playing right now, and though the season is early - the players seem to be waiting for a move… to me that also means something is amiss in the dressing room. There is no way a team can be that bad just simply based on on-ice play - other factors are involved.
