Leafs Make Cap Room For Future Moves By Waiving Finger

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,
Why now? Well, if Finger continued practising with the NHL club and suffered an injury, the Leafs wouldn’t be able to put him on waivers until he was healthy again. A blocked shot and a broken foot, then, could rob the club of useful salary-cap leverage.
Beyond that, it’s remarkable how the heat is already mounting in various NHL cities after only two or three games. See, it’s one thing to imagine carrying salaries during the summer when it’s all theoretical, and quite another when the games begin and the paycheques must be signed….
So maybe people look at the Leafs and their cap space differently today or maybe they say, “Well, duh, we already knew that.”...
Burke’s bet is that sooner than later, the clubs that need to move a body or two will have to do it, and by sending Finger down he’s made it abundantly clear to all GMs — and their owners — that he can ease their cap pain.

One of the last millstones around Burke’s neck that he inherited. Finger’s not a bad player, if they could have him for 1/4 of that pricetag.
