Leafs Talk

from TSN,

The Toronto Maple Leafs have fired coach Paul Maurice and sources tell TSN that the team has approached the Vancouver Canucks asking for permission to speak with recently fired GM Dave Nonis.

Nonis would be brought in to handle the Leafs’ managing duties through next season, with speculation suggesting the Maple Leafs would then approach Brian Burke at the conclusion of the season, with designs on Burke overseeing the entire hockey operation with Nonis continuing to occupy a management role as well.

Noooooooooo!  Not boring Dave Nonis… there are much better candidates out there… please!

Why would they need to ask the Canucks permission to speak to someone the Canucks fired?

I think it’s because although he’s fired, his contract for one more year so he’s still on their payroll?

The Canucks ‘firing’ him basically means that he’s not allowed to do his job anymore… but they still have to pay him for it. He’s their ‘property’ so to speak, for next season, and they have to pay him accordingly.

But there’s probably a clause in Nonis’s contract that says if he does get another job, they won’t have to pay him out the total remaining contract, so the Canucks will likely give Nonis permission to interview with anyone, just to get him off their books and save money. Either that, or they may just buy him out regardless—which I imagine they plan on doing anyway.

*I may have the details wrong here, but I think this basically covers why the Canucks have to give their blessing.

In the words of the Rap legends of the 1990’s, “Smoke weed everyday.”

This Nonis-Burke tandem just stinks of drug-addled decisions. There are so many reasons this will not happen and would be totally counterproductive.
