Leafs Talk

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

As for Toronto, last week an NHL GM told me that he figured his Leafs’ counterpart, Brian Burke, would have both Chris Neil and Travis Moen locked up within the first 24 hours of free agency – and that they would be two-thirds of Toronto’s third line next year. Let’s see if he turns out to be right.

read on for some Hossa/Edmonton thoughts.

Regarding Hossa, Dreger reporting Chiccago showing interest but I wonder, why not just sign Havlat?

Because Havlat is made of glass. He’s a gamble on a long term contract.

If Chicago really is talking to Hossa it’s because Havlat won’t take a short-term deal.  They’re going to have to re-sign Kane, Toews, and Keith next year I believe, so that’s why they have to be careful.  Not sure how they’ll be able to work it with Hossa if they couldn’t with Havlat…

I’d take Hossa over Kane easily. Kane is small, doesn’t play defense, and can’t score like Hossa. Havlat is a better player than Kane, too. But his significant injury history makes him risky on a long term contract. Kane is young and a great player. Hossa is still young too, and a better player.

Chris Neil would be a perfect fit in the new, old-school Leafs. I’m still hoping the Wings take a shot at him though.

Well, Djoos, Kane is 20, Hossa is 30.  Hossa is better defensively, yes, but he wasn’t that good defensively at age 20.  That develops over time.  On the offensive side, Kane had 70 points last year and Hossa had 71 and Hossa was playing a lot of the time with 2 of the best players in the world. Kane is the kind of guy you keep for a long time.  Also, Kane definitely seems to have a lot more heart.

And Toronto gets their heavyweight in Colton Orr.

Hossa is less squishy, in my opinion.
