Learning To Play The Game

from Angela Busch of the Naples News,
Sitting at Germain Arena before the start of the Florida Everblades game against Gwinnett, my goal of playing hockey gets a boost.
I jokingly tell a room full of media members and off-ice officials that I want to learn to play. I’d skated plenty of times as a kid in Minnesota, but I’d never worn the gear or had hockey skates of my own. A few chairs away, James Johnstone, an ECHL linesman and former Florida Gulf Coast University hockey player, overhears what I’m saying.
“My dad and I run a hockey academy at the arena,” he tells me. “You should come.”…
I commit a cardinal hockey sin today at my private lesson — much to everyone else’s amusement. In my rush to put on my equipment, I forget to take off my cloth skateguards.
So I hurry out onto the ice, and as soon as the cloth hits the ice, my legs splay apart and I’m on my back. It’s simply impossible to stay upright with skateguards on, apparently.
