TORONTO (September 23, 2009) – Phoenix Coyotes’ forward Francis Lessard has been suspended for the remainder of the pre-season and three regular season games, as the result of a game misconduct penalty in a pre-season game against the Anaheim Ducks, September 18, the National Hockey League announced today.
The incident took place at 6:38 of the third period and Lessard was assessed a major penalty for boarding and a game misconduct for a hit on Anaheim forward Ryan Donally.

PHX is saying that this lone incident cost Lessard the designated enforcer spot. Now that’s just silly, because they had Lessard, Aaron Downey, and Mitch Fritz all in camp. Now all three are gone. They even sent super-pest Ryan Hollweg to their AHL affiliate, which makes me quite sure they never had any intention of building up the physical style in Phoenix, no matter what their GM was giving lip service to. Lessard is still a bit of a loose cannon? No kidding, of course he is - And he’d sell tickets.
And they’ll wonder why no one will pay to see a boring, non-physical team lose game after game at home… You can’t grow new fans until you can attract them, so why not market the mayhem and get people to show up? That is what got the sport on ESPN and FOX after all, which is what we look fondly back upon now as Bettman’s glory days.
Or, hell, just move the team back to Winnipeg.
