from Helene St. James at the Detroit Free Press,
Bad news for the Wings: Nicklas Lidstrom tried skating this morning at the United Center, but won’t play tonight because his back is stiff, Mike Babcock said. This is the second time in three games Lidstrom has been out with a sore back.
“I don’t thing it’s a big (deal), but it’s two times, so …,” Babcock said.
Babcock also said Hasek may not play Saturday, though no reason was given. Hasek was supposed to play the last game of the regular season.
Stephan Liv has been recalled and will be the backup in Chicago tonight.
added 3:30pm, from MLive,
Hasek took his teammates to dinner Wednesday night in Chicago as a show of his appreciation. He did not show up at the rink for the morning skate.

Thanks.

Having never had, would this be a good time for a cortizone shot, or wouldn’t that do anything?

Kyle Quincey was told earlier in the week that he would dress for tonight’s game, so there was always *someone* on the blueline that was going to sit.
I figured it would’ve been Lidstrom or Chelios, but if it was to be Lidstrom all along it would’ve made more sense to leave him behind in Detroit rather than travel to Chicago.
Regardless, I think this is more rest for Lidstrom than anything serious.

I hope you’re right, Matt, and this is just rest for Lidstrom. He’s been so durable throughout his career it would stink for him to be hurt enough to miss playoff games now.

Somebody’s shaking the media’s chains because he can, and he’s reminding his players to tell him and the medical staff what’s wrong before they go to the media.
We know that he’s going to “shut down” anybody who’s got more than a hangnail, and if you’ve taken a look at WXYZ’s video clips of Babs’ extended media scrums, he can go from refreshingly frank and honest to Scotty Bowman-standoffish in about three seconds. Nick’s definitely got a sore back, and Babs may keep Dom out of the last game just to keep that groin from getting dinged, but it also sounds like he wants Dom to know that he’s willing to go with Ozzie if a series turns, and the rest of this…is part of the game.

It would be shining a spot-light on the patently obvious to say that if Lidstrom is out for the post season, the Wings playoff hopes are finished. I’m going to pray to the hockey-god altar that his sitting out is precautionary. However, Zetterberg’s back strain has turned out to be much more involved than the Wings originally let-on. Hopefully for Wings fans Lidstrom’s back issues are very minor.
