Lidstrom Selected Sporting News Player Of The Decade

from Craig Custance & Steve Greenberg of the Sporting News,
Lidstrom is an anomaly—the first European-born player to win a Conn Smythe ( 2002) and the only one to captain a Stanley Cup champion (’08). But the Swedish defenseman’s accomplishments cannot be trivialized. Twice in this decade—from 2001-03 and 2006-08—the 17-year veteran has three-peated as the winner of the Norris Trophy. In a word: ridiculous.

Not once was he the player of the year, but he’s the player of the decade.
This speaks to his consistently being in the top 5 players every season. And probably the best defenseman every season.
I can’t put anybody else above him for the whole decade.
Top 5 defenceman of all-time, maybe top 3.
‘00’s Lidstrom
‘90’s Lemieux,M.
‘80’s Gretzky
‘70’s Orr
‘60’s Hull,R.
‘50’s Howe
‘40’s Richard,M.

Lidstrom has won 4 Cups, not two
Correct, but I think he was writing about the decade only.

One of the most amazing things about St. Nick is that he’s played in 1330 out of 1360 (or so) games in his career. And some of the 30 (or so) games he missed came because his coach sat him down for a rest at the end of a season. I still remember Babcock’s comment about Nick when he first became the head coach. He said, “You have no idea how good this guy is until you see him every day.”
