Lilja A Duck?

via Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Andreas Lilja, whose visa was set to expire today, apparently has signed a one-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks, according to Sweden’s Expressen.

The Ducks needed some help on defense after Andy Sutton fractured his thumb in a fight with Detroit’s Ruslan Salei on Friday.

Probably offered him the league minimum.  Not like he was bargaining from a position of strength

glad he’s found a job and can stay.

sure he’s a bit of an idiot for not taking the wings’ offer, but i’d rather see him play in the nhl than anywhere else.

but ... the ducks?! bah. well, could’ve been worse. if he somehow manages to look not absolutely terrible with that anaheim d, he’s even better than i thought.

the ducks are going to get a nice high draft pick next year. hrhr.

lilja gambled and lost (e.g., having to play with that thin d). his kids are at school in the states. would’ve been a tough situation if he had to leave the country, so i’m happy it worked out for him.

i don’t hate him for choosing the ducks - just see it as a hockey gods/karma-thing for turning down an offer from a team like the wings.

and finally: are the ducks going to be a threat to detroit this season? no effin way. so no concern lilja plays there. he’s not gonna make the poultry win against uncle mike’s boys.

Rather unfortunate from a Wings fan’s perspective, but at least he doesn’t have to leave the country.  Hopefully he’ll have a good season and have better options next year.

Can’t wait for Lils to atone for the Selanne episode in Game 5 of the 2007 WCF by coughing one up for Pavel down low next time the Wings play the Duckies.

Yeah, karma for trying to get financial security for his family.

What a piece of shit, right?

Good for Lilja.  Now fire his agent.

look, i already stated twice that im happy for lilja being allowed to stay in the country and, more important, finally having a job with an nhl team.

can’t help but grin about the fact that now he’s gotta play with a ducks d that is bound to look like a leafs/oilers-hybrid from last season. if that ain’t something like hockey god-inducted fate for him, then i don’t know. minus the sharks, there’d have been 27 other teams he could’ve signed with, theoretically. i like irony.

Uh huh, and again, god-inducted fate because he was hoping to get some job security to provide from his family.

I see.

it wasn’t the $$$ in Detroit, it was another one year deal. He was looking for stability and got burned. He’s a good guy. This isn’t Federov bolting for greener pastures.

Hmmm, that’s a tough one for me.  The Ducks are a piece of trash, garbage organization(except for Selanne)...but he is an ex Red Wing…He’s going to look like shit in that Ducks uniform.

OC Registger update,

Veteran defenseman Andreas Lilja has officially signed a one-year contract with the Ducks on Sunday after agreeing to terms with the team, his agent said.

Lilja’s agent, Todd Diamond, told the Register in an e-mail that his client came to terms with the club Saturday night and is traveling from his home in Sweden to meet up with the team here. Details of the contract are unknown.

Team officials are not commenting until the deal is approved by the league on Monday, which appears very likely. An official announcement is expected to come then.

kinda surprised he was in Sweden already….as much as I hate the Ducks, really glad he finally got on a team. I think he deserves it after showing so much perseverance in making it back to the show.  If he has a great year, he’d be my Masterton Nom. maybe in a couple years he’ll be back in the D

I was honestly a bit surprised the Sharks didn’t sign him out of camp.  Meh, Ducks… he’s going to be a veeerrry minus player this year if he plays much there.  That team isn’t looking too good.

And Garth, you’ve made even the most-cynical and negative posters on here look like friggin’ unicorns, sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows lately.

Good reading comprehension on your part.  I guess in your world “karma” is the same as “irony”?  Or did you not even bother to read the thread at all.  Because if you did, you would see that he specifically said it was karma.  Get it?

Have fun rooting for the Anaheim Liljas this year.  Some Red Wings fans are bigger fans of their own ego and individuality than they are of the team.

blah blah blah reading comprehension.  I swear you mention that in 40% of your posts.  Maybe if you ever actually made a point instead of attacking others’, we’d be better able to comprehend your condescending bitchiness.

*#$%@& Andreas Lilja.  He should be able to provide for his family just fine on the $2.5 million he made over the last two seasons, of which he played all of 80 games.  He gambled and lost.  The market’s tough.  Turns out he didn’t owe the Red Wings a home team discount, but rather that Detroit offered him a come-home bonus, since his open-market value was clearly well below that.  Maybe it’s not karma or irony, but what it certainly is interesting that he let his agent talk him into thinking that he’s worth more than one-year one-million, considering the reality of his situation.

He wasn’t looking for a big paycheck, he was looking for a longer contract. Given his health history, it makes sense both why he would want that and why teams would be hesitant to offer it. I hope he has a breakout year and gets a 3 year somewhere other than anaheim. I can’t imagine he’ll be able to play well in that system. Lilja will be a finesse guy relative to the rest of the goon squad.
