Linesman Suffers Broken Nose & Twenty Stitches

added 6:56pm, As a KK member pointed out in the comments, Hockeyfights.com is reporting this,

The collison gave linesman Pat Dapuzzo a bad facial laceration and broken jaw after Downie’s skate inadverently struck Dapuzzo in the face. CSN Philadelphia reports Dapuzzo needed approximately 60 stitches to close the cut.

As is the case when this type of news just breaks, it is hard to get the complete injury report.  I am sure we shall soon see an official word on the injury suffered by Dapuzzo, and whatever it is, it sure wasn’t pretty to watch.

from the AP via NHL.com,

It was a typically feisty meeting between these rivals as several fights broke out. Six players dropped their gloves at one point in a very physical second period.

Linesman Pat Dapuzzo left the game after he was hit in the face by Steve Downie’s skate following a hard check by Rangers defenseman Fedor Tyutin against the boards.

While Dapuzzo was helped off the ice, leaving behind a trail of blood, a brawl ensued. Downie exchanged blows with Tyutin; Riley Cote and Colton Orr traded shots, and Jim Dowd and Ryan Hollweg went at it.

thanks to a KK reader for the update on Dapuzzo regarding the broken nose and twenty stitches, that according to the Rangers broadcast.

Is Tyutin even a fighter? It looked like Downie took advantage of Dapuzzo being down so he could keep throwing punches at Tyutin, even after he had fallen to the ice.

Hockeyfights is saying 60 stitches a broken jaw, though I don’t see where in the link they provided it says that.

In any case, I thought it was worth mentioning.

No, Tyutin’s not a fighter.  Downie instigated a fight after Tyutin got him with a hip check, and he (Downie) didn’t even take off his visor.  Also, Hollweg and Dowd got fighting majors even though they didn’t throw punches...they didn’t even wrestle!  They just held on to each other and moved out of the way of everyone else.

Dapuzzo also tried to break up one of the fights even though he was bleeding profusely.  One of the refs had to push him away.

Downie is an All-Star. downie should you not mess with him.

The league should kept the pens-flyers game on nbc tomorrow because both teams hate hate each other. people on both sides want blood.

when will this league realize that it needs to market it stretghs like fighting and hard hitting hockey.

flyers are the most exciting team to watch in nhl because they dont care if they are down 2 goals, they will still kick your ass. they are more exciting those euros in detriot skating around in circles scoring pretty goals.

You can’t be a Flyers fan. No Flyers fan could be so stupid to disregard said stupidity in order to post such a thing. Unless you’re 12.

Ouch! I must say that I am impressed with the fact that a guy that was gushing blood and had a broken would still try and do his job. Talk about devoted. The linesman is has a thankless job, mind the offensive zone and break up fights. What kind of resmue do you need for that position?

As for the Tyutin/Downie fight, sh*t happens when these two teams get together.  The dislike for each other makes for better hockey. The entire Atlantic division is like that and it is great! Fighting someone without a visor while you have one should be an extra 2 minutes on top of the 5 for fighting. Rootin’ Tyutin got his ass kicked, but he shouldn’t get a fistful of visor when he tries to land a punch.

Hard hitting hockey I can agree to, but fights? It needs to market fights?

When will people realize that hockey fights are, in fact, incredibly lame by today’s standards? We have professional wrestling, boxing, UFC, mixed martial arts, the list goes on—and still people think that meaningful fans will be made from the comparatively sissified slugging that NHL players decide to do once in a while?

Keep the fights in, but the marketing argument is just ridiculous.

This really got lost in the shuffle of the unfortunate Zednik incident. Will there be a movement to try to get officials to wear visors? If in a perfect world we’d like players to be wearing them, it doesn’t set much of an example unless the guys running the game are.
