Looking at those Free Agent Salaries

CBC asks the question, “What’s behind the big NHL free-agent salaries?”

“Shocked."

That’s the word New Jersey Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello used when asked for his reaction to the amount of money tossed around on July 1, the first day of the National Hockey League’s free-agency period.

Yet more proof that Bettman is a failure.  Look at the salaries that these guys are making now.  Brian Campbell the most recent.  What a joke the NHL has become.  The cap is just going to keep rising, and create the pre-cap NHL again, anyway.

Way to go, Gary!

The cap goes up as revenues increase - if teams keep increasing ticket prices, the cap will keep going up.

Players are guaranteed only a certain percentage of the revenues, no matter what numbers are on the contracts.  Besides, the teams don’t have to be stupid - it’s their choice to ignore any concepts of “budget” or “restraint” or “common sense.” If they are determined to spend money like water, no one can stop them - and I think the idiots deserve whatever consequences result.

Is it really any different than any other sport?  NFL’s payday is coming, Gilbert Arenas just signed a 6 year, $120 mill deal????  MLB is also out to lunch with salaries.

I/m cetainlyno fan of him, and have to agree Gary’s on the hotseat, and I can’t see him making to the next CBA, but he’s no worse then any other commissioner out there.

I thought some of these owners were smart business men?
