Looking For Trade Talk?

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

• Hard as it is to believe, sources say one NHL club has an offer in with the Blue Jackets on goalie Steve Mason, who has one year left at $3.2 million salary and an. 886 save percentage and 3.49 goals-against average

• The Philadelphia Flyers would love it if James van Riemsdyk had one nasty bone in his body to go with his 200-pound frame, but they’re leery of giving him up in a trade (there were discussions of van Riemsdyk for Jack Johnson) because their scouts think he can be a 40-goal scorer. Can a player be something he’s not? Sometimes. Sam Gagner’s game took off after he got out of his comfort zone and took a licking from Francois Beauchemin.

• I know Leafs coach Ron Wilson is a Mikael Grabovski fan, but he has the same number of points as Gagner and I don’t think Gagner thinks he’s a $5 million player, do you? There is no way Leafs general manager Brian Burke will give him that. Don’t be surprised if you see his name on the trade ticker on Monday if the unrestricted free agent still wants that kind of money.

• I suspect the Los Angeles Kings would take an iPhone and an iPod (OK, throw in a Kindle too) at the deadline for Dustin Penner, who has seven goals and 19 points in 63 games since the Edmonton Oilers bestowed him on Dean Lombardi last February. Penner seems to like everything about being an NHLer except playing the games, and that’s sad. Will anybody sign him this summer?

• Brenden Morrow’s body (back, neck) is unfortunately breaking down, which is why the Dallas captain’s name has been out there as a trade possibility. That usually happens to guys who make their bones in the trenches. Craig Simpson had to quit at 27 (back) after absorbing about 5,000 cross-checks while parking himself in front of goalies. “Not sure how Ryan Smyth has played as long as he has the way he plays,” said one pro scout.
